In the afternoon of November 22, the first phase of practical activities co-hosted by Social Practice Department and Youth Volunteer Department of Business School Student Union was held in the First Welfare Home of Changsha with the theme “Not Too Old to Enjoy the Life”.

27 volunteers from Business School went to the First Welfare Home by 908 bus route. Upon arrival, they were divided into 7 groups, with each group setting three persons to look after the aged. Volunteers took lots of fruits to the old. They messaged, peeled the fruit, told jokes, and sang songs for the elders. The elders were looked after very well and the whole room was filled with laughter.

Volunteers also have communicated merrily with the elders. The elders taught volunteers to sing red songs, and volunteers told stories of their college life. Chengjing HU, a volunteer from Class 1401 of E-commerce, expressed that she had a deep understanding on the positive life attitude of the elders by this activity. She thought this activity was of great importance, which not only made the elders happy, but also enriched her mind. She was also looking forward to more opportunities to get along with the elders again.

At 4:30 p.m, this activity came to the end, which had lasted for over two hours. After saying goodbye to the elders, all the volunteers left the Welfare Home and returned to Shenghua Apartment by bus. Their love and warmness was still left in the heart of the elders, despite their leaving.

It is said that this practical activity is the first attempt co-hosted by Social Practice Department and Youth Volunteer Department. This activity can help these two departments integrate their resources, strengthen their communication and enhance the overall strength of the Youth League Committee. As a pilot activity, with its features of voluntary service and its advantage of social practice, this activity encourages all students to get out of internet and their dormitories, and come into the real society to improve their sense of social responsibility and practical ability. It not only provides a platform for those people with the similar aims, but also gives special support for students to carry out the social practice in winter holiday.

Nowadays, the problem of aging population has been attracting more and more attention. The construction and development of our country’s pension system still lags behind. By participating in these social voluntary services, students of Business School are expected to analyze questions, and give some constructive strategies and suggestions to old-age community service in our province.
