The seminar on the Interdisciplinary development strategy of data science and economics and management at the Business School of Central South University was successfully held

On the 21st of October, 2023, in the afternoon, the Central South University High-Quality Development of Humanities Expert Lecture Sub-Forum- Interdisciplinary Development Strategy Seminar for Data Science and Economics and Management, was held in Room 336 of the Jiangwan Building at the Business School of Central South University. The conference invited  Chen Xiaohong, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Party Secretary of Hunan University Of Technology and Business, Director of Xiangjiang Laboratory, and Honorary Dean of the Business School of Central South University, Zhao Shuming, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanjing University, Professor Huang Shao'an, Dean of the School of Economics of Shandong University, Professor Ren Baoping from Nanjing University specializing in Digital Economics and Management, Professor Zhang Bing, Vice President of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics, and Professor Li Qingyuan from the School of Economics and Management of Wuhan University. Members of the Business School leadership team, department heads, and faculty representatives attended the conference. The conference was hosted by associate Dean of the Business school, Liu Yongmei.

At the beginning of the conference, Associate Dean Liu Yongmei introduced the attendees and expressed her anticipation for this conference to provide precise insights into how the school's academic disciplines respond to the challenges of the digital economy era and achieve significant progress.


Dean Wang Zongrun of the Business School delivered a welcome speech and presented the dean’s report. He provided an overview of the overall development of the Business School, covering its achievements, challenges and issues it faces, development goals and key indicators, as well as its main tasks and measures over the past five years.


After listening to the presentation, the panel of experts expressed full recognition of the progress and achievements of the Business School. They also individually addressed topics related to interdisciplinary development, interdisciplinary integration, and achieving breakthroughs in the development of academic discipline. They provided advice and recommendations, offering the Business School scientific and forward-thinking guidance for the development of the academic discipline.


Academician Chen Xiaohong stated that the school has shown a positive development trend in recent years, and under the guidance of the new leadership team, she believes it can be accelerated. In terms of academic discipline development, Academician Chen emphasized the importance of keeping management science at the forefront and focusing on nurturing a talent team. Furthermore, she suggested a renewal of the teaching philosophy, using the strengths of various disciplines to conduct interdisciplinary research in areas such as digital economy, green and low-carbon, and resilient infrastructure. Regarding school development, Academician Chen mentioned that improvements can continue through building research platforms and laboratories and developing talent.


Professor Huang Shao'an expressed that, while the school continues to leverage its key disciplines’ advantages, the field of economics can continuously enhance its strength by utilizing the university's platform, such as through interdisciplinary collaborations with subjects like economics, mathematics, computer science, medicine, etc.


Professor Zhao Shuming analyzed the path of the school's academic discipline development from a human resources perspective. He stressed the importance of talent development for tertiary education and an international perspective in academic discipline development in the digital economy era.


Professor Ren Baoping provided valuable advice for the school from the perspective of applied economics. He stated that, after the national economy experienced the era of information internet, consumption internet, and industrial internet, the development of economics discipline in universities should put great emphasis on digital information development. Promoting discipline development through interdisciplinary approaches to address the integration issue of digital and physical economies.


Professor Zhang Bing emphasized the importance of creating high-level platforms and integrating macro policies. He suggested that the school can focus on key areas, strategically build teams with policy emphasis, and integrate macro-level information such as law and policies into academic discipline development. And this will lead to outstanding achievements in the school research.


Professor Li Qingyuan offered suggestions from the perspective of accounting discipline development. He pointed out that, given the intense competition for talent in the accounting field, as a university in the central region, there is a need for more policy support for talent recruitment. Simultaneously, he predicted that environment and big data will be the two major directions for the future development of the accounting discipline.


In the concluding session of the meeting, Associate Dean Liu Yongmei expressed gratitude for the valuable insights and suggestions provided by the experts. She stated that this conference has offered new perspectives for addressing interdisciplinary development, cross-disciplinary integration, and the substantial development of discipline construction for our school. Going forward, the school will thoroughly analyze and summarize the experts' opinions, focusing on the core elements of interdisciplinary development, and actively propel the development of first-class disciplines.
